Most people don't install Windows and a re-install is a job for the computer shop or a friendly geek.

Anyone like me who has reinstalled Windows from 3 onwards knows that is is anything from straightforward. Modern Linux will often load with less problems than Windows.

We don't hear much about the things that don't work with W7.

Apart from people who need to use specific Windows software ( not games I'd get a PS3 for that ) Linux can be a total replacement.

So that's 99.9% sorted.

Bob

I agree 110% Windows *.* etc is far from perfect & mostly only after SP1's did they start to be commercial products. I have a mint (ie as new not OS) IBM Aptiva CPU Pent 133, 34 Mb RAM 8 Gb HDD!! CD & FDD with a VDU IBM G40 with all orig DOCS & software (Win 95, Office 97) NB this was working on dial up web six months ago with its first owner. What to do with it? as far as I know only PCpuppyLinux 4 ? would / may work on it & then what would I have??. Sadly nobody wants it ie the BNCM at Bletchley Park or anywhere else - even PC's for Africa will only take Pent P3 min 700 Mhz & no CRT VDU. OK it would be good to do GWbasic etc or ?? I suppose all this must be considered as progress ? to where?.
It seems to me that the inherent robust simplicity of the Linux OS has been lost along the way - dissolved into all the types now fighting each other for supremacy and in doing this has given the torch to other OS - now even web based ones - I suppose this is progress?
BTW how do we spel check posts now?

A spell checker in my Ubuntu checks all of my spelling in whichever forum I'm using. I suppose that's progress for you. Windows doesn't include that, obviously!

I guess the jury's still out on that one. Give it time!
I've just bought a Novatech laptop without an OS and installed Ubuntu 9.04
The only issue was wifi, which I got sorted with tremendous help from the Novatech forums.
Long live Novatech and Linux.

Cool

Quite agree with Nova - Best of the Best - so Ill be getting an X10 netbook with Win 7 Starter (£239) & then load Open Office (£0) - best of both worlds me thinks - after all an OS is just an OS

Enjoy!

I don't need a new computer to run Linux.
